Follow the signed Big Dune option through the Jackman Flats network and use the junction map to return to the main parking area. The local guide lists about 6.2 km for this outing, but the named trails interconnect, so adding another branch changes the total. The route crosses sandy ground and open forest with interpretive signs, mountain views and fragile lichen communities. The Big Dune option includes a few steeper sections and links through shorter trails; it is the longest standard outing listed. Stay on the tread: the surrounding lichen is easily damaged by footsteps. Fallen pine trees can obstruct sections after wind.

1. Getting there and parking

From Valemount, travel north on Highway 5 for approximately 12.5 km and take the signed Jackman Flats park turnoff. Use the main trail parking area, where an outhouse is listed. A high-clearance vehicle is not required for the published main access; this is different from the separate horse-trailer approach described on Blackman Road.

Driving access has not been established for this selected route option; check its original sources.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Season and access

Spring through autumn are the usual walking seasons. Sand and exposed areas can become hot in summer. In winter the network is track-set for cross-country skiing; walking and dog use can damage those prepared tracks, so follow the current winter rules and designated use.
