Access and trail reports

Trail cleared to cabin

The source reports the complete cabin approach cleared by the Vanderhoof Rangers on January 31,2026.

Cabin condition concern

The source describes a worn interior and evidence of mice in January 2026. The cabin is maintained by users; a clearing report does not establish accommodation condition.

Reports describe the cited dates. An expected reopening date does not establish reopened access.

A relatively flat forest trail reaches an A-frame cabin at the west end of Home Lake. Wet sections and uncertain cabin condition mean the easy grade should not be confused with a guaranteed dry or serviced outing.

1. Getting there and parking

From Vanderhoof follow the Kenney Dam Road approach past Saik’uz to the Kluskus FSR junction, then take Kluskus toward the signed Home Lake access. One club entry identifies the trailhead at the 43.5 km road marker, while another gives 5.3 km beyond the junction and the municipal guide gives about 21 km beyond it. These are conflicting references, not distances that can safely be combined. Obtain current local confirmation of the signed Home Lake entrance before driving; do not select a turn solely because one of these numbers matches.

2. Walking the route

Follow the marked forest route approximately 6 km to the cabin at the west end of the lake, then retrace it for a roughly 12 km outing. Although the terrain is mostly level, muddy and waterlogged sections are reported, including a reroute near the eastern end of Home Lake. A January 31, 2026 work report records fallen-tree clearing all the way to the cabin. Separate January observations describe the user-maintained cabin interior as worn and showing signs of mice. Treat the cabin as an uncertain shelter rather than dependable accommodation, and carry what you need to complete the outing without it. Summer users can include horse riders; winter use includes skiers and snowmobiles.

  1. From the independently confirmed signed Home Lake start, follow the marked approximately 6 km forest route to the west-end cabin.
  2. Expect wet or muddy sections despite generally flat terrain. Retrace the same trail to the chosen start.

The return

The cabin outing is 12 km return. Published road-marker references conflict, so confirm the actual entrance before applying that distance.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Camping and tenting

The club describes a first-come cabin at the west end of Home Lake with a two-night maximum. Recent guide notes describe a worn interior and signs of mice; carry a plan that does not depend on the cabin being usable or vacant.

Season and access

Club reports trail cleared January 31, 2026; this is a dated condition report.

Winter route

Winter users include cross-country skiers and snowmobiles; the January 2026 clearing report does not establish present snow or cabin conditions.

Access-source disagreement: one Ramblers page gives 5.3 km along Kluskus FSR; its duplicate gives the 43.5 km marker. These differ from municipal kilometre references and are not interchangeable. Use corroborated current access guidance rather than choosing one silently.

The duplicate Ramblers pages give different durations: 3–4 hours and 4–6 hours for the Home Lake outing. Neither is a personalized travel-time estimate.
