An old exploration road climbs to a subalpine meadow before a scramble toward Mount Kostuik’s rocky summit. The direct return, Hidden Valley loop and Windy Ridge traverse are separate choices with different navigation needs.

1. Getting there and parking

From Highway 52 south of Tumbler Ridge, turn onto Core Lodge Road approximately 6.8 km beyond the Kinuseo Falls turnoff. At the fork near kilometre 12.5, keep right on the branch signed for other traffic and avoid the mine-only left branch. Continue to Core Lodge, then follow Five Cabin Road south for about 600 m to the Mount Kostuik sign and parking. The dirt approach is weather-sensitive and may need four-wheel drive when wet; follow the industrial-road signs and radio procedures.

  1. From the Kinuseo Falls junction, continue 6.8 km on Highway 52 East and turn right onto Core Lodge Road.
  2. At road kilometre 12.5, keep right on the branch for other traffic; the left branch is mine-only. Continue to Core Lodge at about kilometre 14.
  3. Take Five Cabin Road south for 600 m to the Mount Kostuik sign and parking.

Road and vehicle: The steward describes rough dirt that may be passable in two-wheel drive when dry, but requires four-wheel drive when wet. Industrial traffic uses Core Lodge Road.

2. Walking the route

Walk west up the dirt track from the parking area and take the right turn after about 100 m. Follow the steadily climbing old exploration road for roughly 2 km to the subalpine meadow. From there, scramble toward the ridge and the conglomerate summit for views over the surrounding peaks and Monkman country. Return by the same line for the simplest outing. The Hidden Valley descent is a separate loop choice, while continuing south along Windy Ridge to the Terminator creates a longer traverse that requires a vehicle at Five Cabin Pass. Those alternatives need their own navigation plan and cannot inherit the direct summit route’s distance.

  1. Walk west up the dirt track and turn right after approximately 100 m.
  2. Climb the old road for about 2 km to the subalpine meadow, then select the scrambling line onto the ridge and summit.

The return

Retrace the summit approach unless a separate Hidden Valley itinerary has been mapped. The southward Windy Ridge–Terminator traverse needs a vehicle at Five Cabin Pass and is a different outing.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Season and access

The alpine ridge is exposed to strong wind and rapidly arriving fog. The access road changes markedly when wet. Choose a clear-weather plan and retain the ability to reverse the known approach.
