Mount Patchett is a longer Wells-area alpine outing reached from the same lower approach as the Vinje Grind. The local trail society publishes approximately 14 km return and five to seven hours for the outing. Its lower road, cutblocks and branching trail access make the chosen parking point important when comparing trip lengths; the source does not publish a reliable cumulative ascent for this route.

1. Getting there and parking

Take the 3100 Road toward Likely from the Bowron Lake Road junction. Around 8 km along it, turn left onto the 1600 Road and continue to the 1615 area. A yellow sign marks a grassy pullout used for the Patchett and Vinje approach. The steward also describes an overgrown side road leading to an upper pullout roughly 1 km farther on, but its condition and vehicle-clearance requirements are not assured. Choose the lower parking if uncertain and include the additional road walking in the day’s plan.

  1. Travel about 8 km on the 3100 Road, turn left onto the 1600 Road and continue to road reference 1615.

Parking: A yellow sign marks the shared Patchett/Vinje grassy pullout. An overgrown upper road may provide another start, but current vehicle access is not guaranteed.

2. Walking the route

Follow the common Patchett approach from the chosen parking. Around 2.2 km up the shared trail, a yellow marker, large rock and sign identify the Magnus/Vinje split; remain on the Patchett route for this outing. The route continues through former logging terrain toward the alpine and the summit cairn. The reviewed public descriptions establish that common junction and summit objective but do not spell out every later branch or the final ridge line. Carry the local route map, note the ascent line for the return and avoid treating the much shorter Magnus summit as an intermediate stop on an assumed signed loop.

  1. Follow the shared approach to the marked Vinje/Magnus split about 2.2 km up.
  2. Stay on the Patchett approach rather than taking the separate steep Vinje summit branch.

The return

The steward lists Patchett as 14 km round trip, taking about five to seven hours. The exact upper approach still needs the steward’s map; a 7.17 km recording is not automatically a complete return.
