A sequence of old road, ATV track and singletrack leads toward alpine terrain above the Lone Prairie area. Creek crossings and a large rock step add route decisions to the sustained climb.

1. Getting there and parking

From Chetwynd take Highway 29 toward Tumbler Ridge for 9.3 km, then turn left onto Lone Prairie Road. Continue 13.7 km and turn right onto Cowie Creek Road. After a further 9 km, turn right onto Nikirk Road and park near this junction without blocking access. The published guide was reviewed in summer 2017; check current road use and condition before relying on its description of a good dirt road.

  1. From Chetwynd, follow Highway 29 for 9.3 km and turn left onto Lone Prairie Road.
  2. After 13.7 km, turn right onto Cowie Creek Road. Continue 9 km to Nikirk Road, turn right and park clear of the junction.

2. Walking the route

Begin on the old road, which may be wet, and follow the route to its right-hand branch onto an ATV track. The track eventually narrows into a footpath climbing toward the alpine. Several creek crossings interrupt the ascent; assess the flow and footing rather than assuming they are always easy. At the large rock face, the described bypass goes around the left side when heading uphill. Reverse that same bypass on descent. The published outing is 11.4 km return with about 650 m of climbing. Older local guidance calls it an early-drying spring option, but that is a seasonal tendency, not a current snow or crossing report.

  1. Follow the sometimes-wet old road to its right-hand ATV branch, which later narrows into a footpath.
  2. At the large rock face, use the described bypass on the left while climbing.

The return

Reverse the same route and rock-face bypass. The summer 2017 guide gives 11.4 km return, 650 m gain and about seven hours.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Water

Several creek crossings are identified as water opportunities in the dated guide. Seasonal flow and safe crossings are not guaranteed, and collected water requires treatment.

Season and access

The 2017 local guide identifies this as a comparatively early-drying spring route. Conditions at creek crossings and any remaining snow still require an independent check.
