one way
A long historic forest corridor runs toward the old Stuart River ferry crossing. Side trails to meadows and lakes provide shorter objectives, while the full one-way route is a much larger outing.
1. Getting there and parking
From Vanderhoof use Northside Road, then turn onto Striegler Pit Road. The district places the trailhead approximately 5 km along that road and roughly 19 km from the visitor centre. Confirm the signed entrance before parking because this is the community-forest trail approach, not the river endpoint. A complete traverse needs arrangements at the far end or time for a return walk.
- From Northside Road, turn onto Striegler Pit Road.
- Continue roughly 5 km to the trailhead; the district places this access about 19 km from the visitor centre.
2. Walking the route
Follow the marked Omineca corridor toward the former ferry crossing on the Stuart River. The district gives 15 km one way; returning to the same trailhead doubles the walking, so choose a shorter turnaround if that is beyond the day’s plan. Signed branches reach McLeod Meadow, Wonder Lake and Expected Lake. The route is shared with horses and mountain bikes. Its history as a Dakelh travel and trade route predates its later use during the Omineca gold rush; remain on the established corridor and leave historical features undisturbed.
- Follow the marked main heritage trail toward the Old Ferry Crossing on the Stuart River.
- Side routes lead to McLeod Meadow, Wonder Lake and Expected Lake; choose them separately from the main crossing objective.
The return
The full published main section is 15 km one way. Walking back to the same trailhead doubles that distance; a one-way trip needs a separately verified exit and transport.
