A gated service road and a separate forest-path option climb to viewpoints above the city. The shorter Pilot Mountain outing is distinct from the longer Nechako Ridge exploration.
1. Getting there and parking
From Highway 97 north turn west onto Chief Lake Road, then north onto Pilot Mountain Road. Continue 2.6 km on pavement and another 1.4 km on gravel to the summit access road on the left. Park in the small clearing at the gate without obstructing maintenance access. The gate prohibits unauthorized motorized travel because the road serves communications towers; the walking approach begins here rather than at the summit.
- From Chief Lake Road, turn north onto Pilot Mountain Road and travel 2.6 km on pavement plus 1.4 km on gravel.
- The summit access road is on the left, with parking in a small clearing at its gate. Leave maintenance access unobstructed.
Road and vehicle: The summit road is closed to unauthorized motor vehicles because it serves communications equipment.
2. Walking the route
For the traditional outing, walk the access road uphill toward the summit viewpoints and return the same way. A separate forest route has been described leaving near the first utility pole on the left as you head up; it climbs to a lookout and continues toward the south summit. That path depends on current marking, so do not assume it is as obvious as the road. The listed short outing is about 3 km return with 183 m of climbing. Views can include Chief Lake, Wright Creek, the city and distant mountains. Keep clear of the operational towers and do not add the much longer Nechako Ridge route without a separate plan.
- For the traditional outing, follow the gated utility road uphill toward the summit viewpoints.
- The separate forest alternative leaves near the first pole on the left and continues toward a lookout and the south summit. Use it only with the current marked connection identified.
The return
Retrace the chosen approach. The short summit outing is separate from the much longer Nechako Ridge route.
3. Route map
Published locations only. A complete route line is still needed.
Published locations
Numbered points match the map. Use the role beside each point. A summit or park reference point is not a parking location.
