A gentle riverside walk links the migratory-bird observation tower at Riverside Park with the WL McLeod wetland. River lookouts and wooded sections make this a useful short birdwatching outing.

1. Getting there and parking

Begin at Riverside Park in Vanderhoof and locate the observation tower for the Migratory Bird Sanctuary. This is the upstream landmark used in the district’s route description. The far end meets the WL McLeod wetland downstream; plan to retrace the riverside path or use a separately mapped town connection if you want a loop.

Parking: Start by the Migratory Bird Sanctuary observation tower in Riverside Park.

2. Walking the route

From the observation tower, follow the gravel path downstream beside the Nechako River. The route passes river-viewing stops and forest before reaching the wetland connection. The published 1.35 km is one way, so a return walk on the same path is about twice that distance. Continue into the wetland only if you want the additional short visit to its platform. The district identifies the route as family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, but gravel, seasonal river conditions and the approach to individual viewpoints still need to suit your party.

  1. Follow the gravel route downstream along the Nechako River, passing river overlooks and forest sections.
  2. The named section ends at the WL McLeod wetland.

The return

The district publishes 1.35 km one way between the tower and wetland. Retracing it is approximately 2.7 km; adding the wetland paths changes the outing.
