NORTHWARD PRINCE GEORGE & BEYOND

Fort St. James / Full trip pack

Sowchea Bay campground

https://hikingprincegeorge.com/hikes/sowchea-bay-campground

A Stuart Lake campground west of Fort St. James, with many sites near the water. It is primarily a lake camping destination rather than a documented long hiking route.

1. Getting there and parking

From Prince George travel west on Highway 16 to the Vanderhoof area, then north on Highway 27 to Fort St. James. From the community follow Sowchea Bay Road west for approximately 20 km to the signed park access. Use the official campground entrance and confirm road and seasonal opening information before towing a trailer or arriving late.

  1. From Prince George, take Highway 16 west to Vanderhoof, then Highway 27 north to Fort St. James.
  2. Follow Sowchea Bay Road west for about 20 km to the campground.

Parking: Sowchea Bay has no day-use area; BC Parks directs day visitors to Paarens Beach approximately 5 km east along Sowchea Bay Road.

Road and vehicle: The former forestry-site layout can be difficult for large RVs. Boat-launch parking is limited.

2. At the campsite

Select an authorized campsite and use the established campground roads and public lake access for local walking. The BC Parks overview does not define a measured hiking loop within this small park, so do not attach the distances of nearby Stuart Lake hikes to the campground record. Water-adjacent sites are convenient for viewing the lake, but keep tents and equipment within the assigned camping area and away from unsafe shore edges. Plan separate transport and trail information for Mount Pope or other regional hikes, and check current services and reservations directly with the park.
