A large recreation network east of Prince George offers forest loops, ski trails and several shelters. A named loop and its entrance are the useful planning unit; the mountain itself has no single hiking distance or elevation profile.

1. Getting there and parking

The network is approached from Highway 16 or Groveburn Road east of Prince George, but those entrances serve different sections. One specifically documented north-side start is the Birchleg access: approximately 24 km east from the Yellowhead Bridge along Highway 16, past Tabor Ski Hill, then right into the rail-car parking clearing about 300 m from the highway. Use that entrance only for the linked north-side trails. The general Tabor entry’s approximately 16 km town-distance description does not identify the same parking point or provide a complete Groveburn approach.

2. Walking the route

Use the network map to choose a named loop before leaving the parking area. The north-side Birchleg outing links Hickory Wing Shelter, the history shed, Birchleg/Sawdust Shelter and Ilse’s Inn; its detailed junction sequence is in the separate Birchleg guide. Other branches can add substantial distance or finish at another entrance. Record the lot and the junction names used on the outward leg. The source describes more than 100 km of trails developed in part by the Sons of Norway Ski Club, with three shelters and management by the Tabor Mountain Recreation Society. Its 1–16 km range covers selected outings, and its listed 500 m gain is not attached to a particular loop. The network line on a map includes branches, not a mandatory itinerary connecting every path. Check current activity signs and choose a route appropriate to walking or the relevant winter activity.

Season and access

The northern network is described for hiking and cross-country skiing; individual branches may have different shared-use and winter-maintenance arrangements. Confirm those arrangements rather than assuming every mapped line is a maintained winter walking route.
