Riverbank paths, bridges and tree-bark carvings make Cottonwood Island a varied low-level walk near the Nechako–Fraser confluence. There are several entrances and route combinations, with connections to the wider Heritage River Trail.
1. Getting there and parking
Use River Road, reached from Highway 16 near the Yellowhead Bridge or from Carney Street. The municipal park address is 850 River Road, beside the Railway and Forestry Museum. Several parking and entry areas serve the park, so note the one you use before joining the paths. A route beginning beside the museum is different from a short walk from the boat-launch access.
Parking: Use a River Road park entrance beside the Railway and Forestry Museum; River Road connects from Highway 16 near the Yellowhead Bridge or from Carney Street.
Drive from Prince George: 3.3 km · approximately 4 minutes. Estimate; allow for road conditions and stops.
Modeled one-way driving time from downtown Prince George using mapped road speeds, rounded up to a whole minute. No live traffic or invented forest-road multiplier. Use the park parking area beside the museum; the reserve has several other entry points.
2. Walking the route
Choose a shoreline circuit from the entrance map, following the river paths and their connecting bridges. Tree carvings, interpretation, benches and viewing areas provide frequent stops; the inland side of a longer circuit returns near the railway museum. The City lists 2.2 km of park trails, while one separately described clockwise circuit measures 2.9 km, so pick the route rather than assuming a single fixed loop. Surfaces include pavement, gravel and dirt and are mostly level. Keep dogs leashed and use signed crossings; the railway and river edge are not walking shortcuts. Longer Heritage River Trail connections need their own plan because the City reports unavailable sections elsewhere along the Nechako.
The return
Several entrances and connecting paths serve the park. Choose a circuit at the entrance map and return to the same access. The City’s 2.2 km figure describes park trails rather than a uniquely defined loop.
3. Route map
City mapped trail segments / park network; not a single measured hiking itinerary
