A creekside forest walk north of Mackenzie ends at an unfenced waterfall. The first half is comparatively level, while the latter half climbs and descends through a series of switchbacks.
1. Getting there and parking
From Mackenzie continue north on Highway 39 until pavement gives way to gravel, staying on the main road. At the stop sign at the 12 km point on Parsnip West FSR, turn right. Follow the road to the bridge near the 32 km sign and park just beyond it on the right, clear of the travelled road. The May 2021 steward brochure lists Resource Road Channel 1; confirm current posted radio requirements and watch for industrial traffic. Walk back south across the bridge to the small trail sign on the east, or left, side of the road.
- Travel north from Mackenzie on Highway 39 and continue straight onto the gravel forest-road approach.
- At the stop sign near Parsnip West FSR km 12, turn right. Continue to the bridge near km 32 and park beyond it on the right.
Parking: Park on the right just beyond the bridge near Parsnip West FSR km 32. The walking start is back across the bridge.
Road and vehicle: The steward identifies active industrial-road travel and resource-road channel 1. Confirm current roadside radio signs and keep the bridge and travelled road clear.
2. Walking the route
Follow the path along the south side of Cut Thumb Creek. The first half stays on a bench above the water with creek views and occasional wet ground. Farther along, the trail moves away from the creek and gains height through rolling terrain; larger slopes use switchbacks. The final descent returns to the creek and falls and is steeper. The maintained path ends when the falls come into view, so choose a secure viewing position rather than continuing blindly onto creek banks. There is no safety fence and the cutbanks can be unstable. Retrace the same 5.1 km return route; do not cut across switchbacks on the climb out.
- Walk back south across the bridge. Find the small trail sign on the left, on the east side of the road.
- Follow the bench on the south side of Cut Thumb Creek, then climb the switchbacks as the path leaves the immediate creek bank.
- Descend the final steep switchbacks toward the falls. The maintained trail ends where the falls come into view.
The return
Retrace the approach, including the climb back from the waterfall. The creek cutbanks are steep and may be unstable; the falls have no safety barrier.
3. Route map
Published locations only. A complete route line is still needed.
Published locations
Numbered points match the map. Use the role beside each point. A summit or park reference point is not a parking location.
