Access and trail reports

Kinuseo platform closed for 2026

BC Parks confirms that structural problems keep the falls viewing platform closed for the 2026 season; the notice was updated February 3, 2026. The route to upper viewpoints remains open in that notice, but is challenging and has steep drop-offs. This does not close the whole falls area.

Several walks reach viewpoints of Kinuseo Falls. BC Parks confirms the main viewing platform is closed for the 2026 season; the upper viewpoints use a more demanding trail.

1. Getting there and parking

From Tumbler Ridge, follow Highway 52 south for about 14 km and turn right onto Kinuseo Falls Road. Continue roughly 51 km on the signed gravel approach, allowing extra time for washboard, potholes and industrial traffic. Inside Monkman Park, take the signed one-kilometre spur to the falls parking, where picnic tables and outhouses are described. Check current forestry-road conditions and any radio requirements before leaving town.

Parking: A signed 1 km spur inside Monkman Park leads to the falls parking, picnic area and outhouses.

Road and vehicle: The long Kinuseo Falls/Murray FSR approach is gravel with industrial traffic. Road conditions and current radio instructions need checking before the drive.

2. Walking the route

Use the signed viewpoint trails from the falls parking. The ordinary accessible platform at the lip of the falls is closed for the 2026 season under the park advisory; do not rely on older descriptions of a 150 m wheelchair-accessible visit. The upper viewpoint is approximately 250 m from the start and remains a separate, more demanding walking option when authorized. Longer branches lead toward Leake Viewpoint, around 1.5 km away, and downstream/riverside viewpoints around 2 km each way. Those longer paths include very steep sections and should not inherit the short platform route’s accessibility rating. Stay behind barriers and use only open signed routes.

The return

The selected short outing retraces the roughly 250 m approach to the upper viewpoint. The closed lip platform and longer downstream routes are separate options.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Camping and tenting

Kinuseo Falls campground is the nearby established vehicle-accessible campground and the start of the long Monkman backcountry trail. The falls parking and viewpoint paths are day-use areas, not substitute campsites.

Toilets

Outhouses are listed at the falls parking area.

Season and access

Mountain weather is changeable even in summer, with cool rain and wind common. BC Parks says the access road is maintained only to kilometre 21 in winter, so the summer road-end start is not a normal winter driving destination. Water must be treated, and overnight parties need a stove and a complete backcountry plan.

Dogs

BC Parks requires pets on a leash and restricts them from park buildings and beach areas. Backcountry travel with pets is discouraged because of wildlife encounters; this is the park rule, not evidence that a difficult route is suitable for a dog.

Source comparison: Viewpoint choices; 1–3 hours duration; return, depending on viewpoints scope. A source edition, network range or unresolved start/endpoint is not a separate route.
