Walk the mostly level remains of the old Monkman Pass highway to a clearing with deteriorating cabins from a former mink ranch. Expect wet patches and shared ATV use before retracing the approach.

1. Getting there and parking

From Tumbler Ridge, follow Boundary Road southeast for about 72 km and turn right onto Stony Creek Road. Cross the creek after roughly 300 m, then park by the large clearing on the left about 100 m farther on. Follow the trail signs from that clearing.

  1. At about 72 km from Tumbler Ridge on Boundary Road, turn right onto Stony Creek Road.
  2. Cross the creek after about 300 m and continue another 100 m.

Parking: Use the large clearing on the left and locate the trail signs.

2. Walking the route

Walk the old Monkman Pass highway alignment for approximately 3 km to Kruger’s Flats, then return the same way for about 6 km total. This is a mostly level historic route to the site of a 1930s mink ranch, where deteriorating cabins and other remains survive. Leave structures and objects undisturbed and view unstable buildings from outside. ATVs share the route, and short wet sections can persist in wetter years; step aside where sightlines are limited.

  1. Follow the old highway alignment about 3 km to the historical ranch clearing.
  2. View the deteriorating buildings from outside and leave objects where they are.

The return

Return over the same track, approximately 6 km in total. The route is shared with ATVs and has some wet sections.

5. Camping, facilities and seasons

Camping and tenting

The old cabins are heritage remains in disrepair, not bookable accommodation or verified emergency shelters. No designated campsite was established by the trail description.

Season and access

The trail can be wet in rainy seasons even though the grade is gentle. The retained guide does not document a maintained winter route or verify the structural safety of old cabins.
