Sources & updates
Local knowledge makes this guide useful. Northward brings together mountain routes, forests, waterfalls and camping from Prince George to the Robson Valley, Pine Pass, Wells and Tumbler Ridge. Each place links to the people and organizations behind its information.
What the numbers mean
The current catalogue has 324 places, routes and networks with researched source notes, plus 275 listings with limited published details. These are catalogue entries: a destination may contain several outings, and a camp or trail network may have its own entry. Duplicate names that redirect elsewhere are excluded.
Of the 324 researched entries, 318 have a sourced map location, 156 have a reusable route or network line, 93 display public photographs, and 255 link to source galleries. These groups overlap. A map location may identify a destination or park address rather than parking.
33 main outings have mapped start-to-finish coverage supported by endpoint and route-order evidence; 44 destinations have at least one such outing when named alternatives are included. These counts describe map coverage, not field verification or complete trip information. A reference line or a set of network paths does not establish a complete hiking route.
41 guides also offer verified AllTrails map embeds. Each identifies the outing it shows, including differences from the selected route. These maps remain hosted by AllTrails; their tracks and photographs are not copied into our GPX files or offline packs.
What still needs research
The October 19 review tracks every original destination individually, including preserved duplicate links. It records each named route’s map coverage, full elevation profile, distance basis, photographs, driving estimate and remaining evidence gaps. New photographs are checked for reuse permission, location and absence of visible people.

Start with the people who know the place
For mountain access and local detail, useful starting points include Caledonia Ramblers, Prince George Backcountry Recreation Society, Hike Valemount, McBride Tourism, Wells and Area Trails Society and Wolverine Nordic & Mountain Society.
Check BC Parks, Recreation Sites and Trails BC and the relevant land manager for rules and notices. Related tourism pages sometimes repeat a steward's guide; repetition does not make a second independent confirmation.
Public listings on AllTrails help compare named outings, measurements and dated visitor reports. An individual track, a calculated walking time and a user's conditions report have different meanings. We match the route and dates before applying a claim, and retain separate permissions checks for maps, photographs and downloadable tracks.
Read the date as well as the detail
A research date records when a source was reviewed. A guide update, a person's last hike, a road inspection and a condition report can all have different dates. An older report remains useful history. An unavailable advisory or no alert found does not establish that a route is open.
Choose the outing you intend to do before using its distance, elevation gain or time. Lake, summit and alternative approaches can differ substantially. Unknown measurements stay unknown, and conflicting source claims need their endpoints and dates checked.
How maps, weather and photographs are sourced
Route lines can describe recorded outings, planned routes, approximate alignments or whole networks. Their scope and source matter. Elevation profiles combine available geometry with terrain data; they are not measurements made during a hike. Weather is a model forecast from Open-Meteo for the mapped location.
OpenStreetMap route lines credit OpenStreetMap contributors and use the Open Database Licence (ODbL). Download the attributed route-line database (GeoJSON) to inspect the geometry and its individual source references.
Our sampled elevation profiles follow those mapped lines and use Copernicus GLO-90 terrain heights served by Open-Meteo, with terrain attribution under CC BY 4.0. The derived profile database retains ODbL terms for its OpenStreetMap-derived locations. Download the profiles and full credits (JSON). Terrain resolution and the scope of each mapped section limit the precision of the resulting profile.
Public photographs retain their creator, original source and licence. Read the photo credits. Linked galleries remain on their original websites. Photos, source maps and GPX files are reused only when their specific rights allow it; a public download link alone is not permission. Offline guides do not bundle external photos, basemaps or source maps.
What we learned from the reference library
The research review dated October 17, 2026 covers 58 source families. It includes mountain guides, steward reports, official resources and route platforms, with inaccessible material and historical documents clearly identified. Text inspection, a rendered page and an exercised control are recorded separately.
The priorities are clear: useful mountain corridors, route choices with consistent facts, practical road and camping information, dated condition evidence, and photographs of the actual place with verified reuse rights.

| Source & useful idea | What needs care |
|---|---|
| Hiking Prince George / T&T Adventures Regional mountain breadth and dated contributions tested: list navigation; map search incomplete | The list has 123 embedded markers and 126 visible links including three non-route posts; the main map has 126 markers. Recorded outings may have different endpoints from cabin-only routes. |
| Caledonia Ramblers Local expertise, route effort and stewardship rendered directory; intended route link not found | An explicitly dated October 2025 Farm closure remains beside 2026 events; guidebooks and schedules are not live trail status. |
| Prince George Backcountry Recreation Society Cabins, access roads and mountain areas not tested | Maps explicitly identify waypoints as approximate. The October 6, 2026 road update applies to named roads, not all mountain access. |
| Hike Valemount / Yellowhead Outdoor Recreation Association Selectable lake, summit and loop outings rendered inspection; controls not exercised | Distance/gain filter tags conflict with numerical route tables. An article update does not confirm current vehicle access. |
| Wolverine Nordic & Mountain Society Mountain discovery and practical amenities rendered inspection; controls not exercised | A moderate undeveloped route can require experienced route finding. Spieker 6 km return summary and ridge narrative need explicit scope. |
| McBride Tourism Robson Valley mountain catalogue not tested | The 2010 guide marks access and facilities as unupdated. A 2025 expected bridge repair is not proof of present reopening. |
| Wells and Area Trails Society Summit collections and alternative approaches not tested | Collection-level easy/moderate language cannot represent Class 2/exposed or unmarked routes. |
| BC Parks Manager rules and park advisories rendered advisories; controls not exercised | Static page text can show a loading placeholder; absence of a visible alert is not an all-clear. |
| Cariboo Regional District Accessibility information for real decisions rendered mobile inspection; controls not exercised | Coordinates and coordinate-system labels contain inconsistencies. An accessible designation does not supply missing measured width or gradient. |
| Trailforks Network and activity-specific mapping not tested | Raven metadata mixes a Smithers heading with a Sugarbowl description; directional segment ascent/descent cannot become a return-hike gain. |
| 10Adventures Comparable route summaries not tested | The 13.8 km / 805 m outing combines lake and ridge; it does not provide a separately measured lake-only route. |
| iHikeBC Ordered photo waypoints not tested | Historical snow, deadfall and access observations cannot establish present conditions; source photos have no identified open reuse permission. |
| Off Track Travel Backpacking and camping logistics not tested | Booking rules, prices and reopening information need manager confirmation; article refresh is not another field visit. |
| Ozalenka Alpine Club Specialist cabin information not tested | Booking was not performed. A 7 km approach and a cabin rebuilt in 2022 do not resolve the separate access-road bridge question. |
| Fraser Headwaters Alliance Long-route segmentation not tested | Lower 14 km and upper 49 km sections are separated by an 8 km road; stale expected bridge repair and bus advice require review. |
Coverage and how updates work
The coverage plan follows travel corridors: Upper Fraser and McGregor, McBride and the Robson Valley, Valemount and Mount Robson, Mackenzie and Parsnip, Pine Pass and Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Monkman, Wells and Barkerville, Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake, and Fort St. James. Local Prince George, northern Cariboo and Blackwater outings retain their own geography.
Automatic checks retrieve regional DriveBC reports, recreation closures and advisories for Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den, Evanoff, Mount Robson and Monkman parks. Shared caches refresh as needed: roads hourly, recreation daily and these park feeds every six hours. Refreshes happen when a visitor requests conditions after the relevant cache has expired. Each result keeps its retrieval date and shows when a source is unavailable. These feeds do not cover every trail or forest road.
The proposed editorial process reviews official notices, road reports and urgent corrections weekly, then rotates through corridor details and media rights monthly. A correction should identify the place, route, disputed detail, evidence link and observation date. Reviewed changes retain the previous claim and reason for the decision.
The detailed plan includes acceptance criteria, a proposed route-data model and an audit of the pre-update site. Its audit counts are a dated research snapshot; the catalogue counts above come from the current data.
