War Falls
A short walk in Carp Lake Park reaches two distinct cascades on the McLeod River. The falls are close to War Lake camping, but the viewpoint is a day-walk destination rather than a tent site.

Getting there & parking
From Highway 97 at McLeod Lake take the Carp Lake park access road. McLeod Lake is about 141 km north of Prince George; the main Carp Lake campground is another 32 km along the gravel road, but War Falls is near the park’s eastern entrance before the main campground. Follow the signed War Falls access rather than continuing automatically to Carp Lake. The road includes narrow, rough and winding sections with industrial traffic and may be unsuitable for some vehicles during spring breakup.
Map position: 54.86607, -123.26261 · start point of published trip track (parking unverified). Embedded trip-map feature 'Trail Planner Map': first recorded coordinate [-123.26261, 54.86607]. Point extracted from the original public trip map. A track start is evidence of where recording began, not certification of parking, legal access, road suitability or the complete route.
On the trail
Take the path from the information stand and follow the east side of the McLeod River.
Descend the longer stair sections and pass the smaller cascades to the final viewpoint.
Full route notes
Start at the roadside information stand and follow the interpretive path along the McLeod River. Longer stair sections descend toward the cascades and the final falls viewpoint. Keep to the established path near the steep riverbank. Return by the same route, climbing the stairs back to parking. The waterfall entry in the 2025 visitor guide explicitly gives an 800 m one-way approach, so this guide uses about 1.6 km for the return walk. Its separate trail table gives 0.8 km under an out-and-back heading; that conflicting table value is not silently treated as the full outing. The older steward brochure describes a viewpoint, but current barriers and platform condition have not been verified.
The way back
Climb the stairs and retrace the path to the same roadside pullout. The full outing includes the ascent back from the river.
Distance and elevation source notes
The 2025 visitor guide is internally inconsistent: its trail table lists 0.8 km with an out-and-back type, while the waterfall entry explicitly says 800 m one way. The displayed 1.6 km return is calculated from the explicit one-way entry. The 2021 MORATA brochure gives 1 km without a clear one-way/return basis.
Conditions & seasons
Season-specific access has not been established in this guide. Read the dated notices and original land-manager information before choosing a departure date.
These are dated research notes. Open the trip planner for current available weather and advisory feeds; no alert found does not establish that a trail or road is open.
