Fort George Canyon

A forest walk descends from the plateau to a dramatic reach of the Fraser River that once challenged sternwheelers. The steepest work comes on the return climb from the river, and the canyon water is powerful and hazardous.

Approximate ground elevation from a 90 m terrain model. Distance follows the mapped itinerary and may differ from published walking distance. This is a terrain-model profile, not a surveyed measurement. Any ascent total is identified separately with its own source or estimation method.

The retained section 0 is the exact connected sequence of OSM ways 197544136 and 197544139: node 2077659548 to shared node 2077659659 to node 4817254405. Both ways are named Fort George Canyon Trail and cite DataBC Recreation Line. The start is 6.6 m from named parking node 4234560096, on the official western access. Its 6.566 km river endpoint is corroborated by the independent public Komoot route’s Fraser waypoint at 6.55 km and 13.1 km return. No lines are connected across gaps; side branches are excluded. BC Parks and the club describe an out-and-back river outing. Published 4.8 km one-way and 10 km totals remain conflicting claims; the reason is unresolved.

Getting there & parking

Use the west-side approach from Highway 16 west; BC Parks explicitly says there is no park access from Red Rock Road East. Turn left onto Blackwater Road and drive 11.3 km, then turn left onto West Lake Road. After another 9.7 km, turn left onto the unnamed access road and continue approximately 3 km to the parking area. This reaches the hiking trail on the west bank; a navigation pin on the opposite side of the Fraser does not provide an alternative entrance.

Estimated drive from Prince George: 55 min · 34.4 km. Modeled one-way driving time from downtown Prince George using mapped road speeds, rounded up to a whole minute. No live traffic or invented forest-road multiplier. The final approach is a forest road. BC Parks states there is no park access from Red Rock Road East; use the west approach and check current road conditions.

Map position: 53.67992, -122.79629 · named trail parking. OSM names this node Fort George Canyon Trail parking. It is on the western access road and within 7 m of the retained walking start; the official park guide confirms this western approach. Not field verified.

On the trail

Follow the mapped Fort George Canyon Trail from the west-side parking area to the Fraser River, then retrace the same path to parking: about 13.1 km return, excluding side branches. The club’s 2025 schedule describes a 13.2 km return with 404 m elevation gain, closely matching this mapped outing. BC Parks also publishes 4.8 km one way, and the older club trail overview lists 10 km; the reason for those shorter measurements is not established. Plan for the longer mapped return rather than assuming those descriptions cover the same extent.

Distance and elevation source notes

The mapped west-side parking-to-Fraser itinerary is 6.57 km each way (about 13.1 km return). BC Parks publishes 4.8 km one way and Caledonia Ramblers lists 10 km; the reason for these different distances is not established.

The club’s trail page gives 215 m of descent, while its May 25, 2025 scheduled 13.2 km return explicitly gives 404 m elevation gain. The latter is the published ascent used here; it is not derived from descent or summit altitude.

Independent route comparison: Komoot describes a 13.1 km return with the Fraser waypoint at 6.55 km and 270 m ascent. Explore publishes 13.2 km and 436 m; a local recorded outing covers 14.22 km and 336 m ascent. Different route extents and elevation processing prevent treating those gains as interchangeable.

The 2025 club schedule explicitly pairs Fort George Canyon with 13.2 km, 404 m elevation gain and approximately 4 hours for a return hike. Its distance corroborates the 13.13 km independently mapped parking-to-Fraser outing; the source does not publish its GPS measurement method.

Conditions & seasons

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible, but BC Parks does not maintain or track-set the winter trails. A trail-clearing report is dated November 15, 2025; it is not a current inspection.
