Howling Wolves Peak
A former exploration road leads to a steep ridge climb and a summit above the Hasler road country. It is an unmaintained mountain route where the ridge junction, weather and return navigation matter more than a simple trail rating.

Getting there & parking
From Chetwynd follow Highway 97 toward Prince George for 24.8 km and turn left onto Westcoast FSR. Drive 9 km to the fork, take the right branch onto Hasler Road, and continue 33.5 km to a left turn onto Goodrich Road. After 10.2 km, look for the old mining-exploration road on the right and park clear of active access. The 2018 club directions describe no sign at this turn. Westcoast is radio-controlled. Its individual road distances conflict with the club’s headline distance from town, so use the junction sequence and a current road map rather than the headline total alone.
Map position: 55.34322, -122.06531 · start point of published trip track (parking unverified). Embedded trip-map feature 'HowlingWolvesPeak': first recorded coordinate [-122.065307, 55.343216]. Point extracted from the original public trip map. A track start is evidence of where recording began, not certification of parking, legal access, road suitability or the complete route.
On the trail
Walk the old exploration road for about 2.8 km.
Leave it to the right and climb the steep slope to the ridge.
Turn left along the ridge toward Howling Wolves Peak and its summit cairn; Mount Goodrich is the opposite direction.
Full route notes
Walk the former exploration road for approximately 2.8 km. At the climbing route, turn right up the steep slope to gain the ridge; older descriptions mention intermittent orange flagging. On reaching the ridge, the Howling Wolves objective is to the left, with Mount Goodrich in the opposite direction. Follow the ridge to the summit cairn and reverse the same route, taking care to identify the descent back to the exploration road. The basic guide gives 12 km return, while a 2026 recording is longer and climbs more; those are different recorded scopes. An August 29, 2026 trip found dry ground but strong wind and cloud, illustrating the exposure even in otherwise favourable conditions.
The way back
Retrace the ridge to the steep descent back to the exploration road. The basic 2018 guide gives 12 km return; the later recording is a different measured scope.
Terrain: unmaintained route · route finding · radio-controlled forest road.
