Huble After Dark: What Happens When the Homestead Lights Go Down

Discover Huble After Dark’s mix of history and spooky storytelling, and how it differs from the homestead’s larger Halloween Spooktacular.

The most interesting discovery was behind a drawer

One of Huble Homestead’s best stories about something hidden in a house concerns a missing diary. After the first printed transcription of Albert Huble’s journals, a volunteer found a small red book wedged behind a drawer in an old desk. It was the missing volume for 1911. A piece of the household’s history had been there all along, waiting to be noticed.

That is a good thought to take into an after-dark visit. There are things its rooms can tell you, things that have survived by accident, and things that become easier to imagine when a guide asks you to look again.

A smaller gathering after hours

Huble After Dark has been offered as a limited guided tour of the grounds and buildings after normal hours. The operator describes local history that is not usually shared on ordinary tours, combined with spooky tales, then a hot drink and time in the General Store. The appeal is the scale: a guided evening rather than a large Halloween crowd.

Darkness changes the way attention works. In daylight, your eye can travel from a house to a field and on to the river. At night, a doorway or the next patch of ground can become the immediate scene. A storyteller can use that narrower view to make a familiar place feel unfamiliar.

Ordinary rooms are enough to start a story

The Huble House contained a parlour, dining room, office and bedrooms. Those names give the building ordinary purposes before any seasonal decoration arrives. Someone worked here, someone needed privacy, and a household had to fit around the business of earning a living.

Other buildings have different kinds of authenticity. The blacksmith shop was recreated in 1995 from photographs and oral histories, and its tools came largely from early Prince George blacksmith John Banzer. It lets you see both the older working life and the later effort to explain it. A guide can help distinguish a surviving object, a reconstructed setting and a story told for the evening.

Choose the kind of evening you want

The Halloween Spooktacular is a separate event. As checked on October 20, 2026, the operator advertised it for Saturday, October 24, from 3 pm to 8 pm, with magic shows, pumpkin carving and a costume contest. A House of Horrors experience had its own ticket link. That programme offers a larger Halloween celebration than the intimate After Dark format.

Tourism Prince George listed After Dark for October 3, 2026, a date that has now passed. Watch the operator’s announcements for another tour. The October 24 Spooktacular is a separate event; confirm its current tickets and activities before travelling.

Take a real detail home

The homestead identifies its setting as traditional Lheidli T’enneh keyoh. An evening programme adds one contemporary gathering to a place with histories extending beyond the rooms opened for a tour.

Whether the evening is quiet or theatrical, leave with one real detail as well as a scare. It might be a household room whose purpose you had never considered, or a tool that makes an old occupation suddenly easier to picture. A good storyteller can make those details linger after the seasonal decorations come down.

The red diary behind the drawer is a particularly good one: a small discovery that gave a year back to the record. Sometimes the most satisfying thing an old house reveals is how much there is still to learn.
