Snowshoeing in Prince George: Where to Go When the City Turns White

A lake in the forest, an open meadow, a dedicated snowshoe network or a park shaped by glaciers: choose the winter outing that fits the day.

Start with the outing you want

A lake in the forest, an open meadow, a dedicated snowshoe network or a landscape of winding ridges: four different winter outings can start with the same pair of snowshoes.

Choose by the experience you want and the time you have. These are starting points, with detailed articles for each place, rather than a list of routes to fit into one afternoon.

Shane Lake: a destination within the forest

In Prince George, Forests for the World puts Shane Lake inside a larger trail network. Kueng Road is the starting point for the shorter lake outing; UNBC is a different approach.

Choose the lake circuit for a clear destination and changing shore views. Stay on the land trails throughout. The park’s total trail mileage is not your target.

Moore’s Meadow: the shape of the land

In Prince George, Moore’s Meadow pairs an open hollow with higher wooded ground in a glacial kettle landscape. Choose it for that contrast. An elevated view into the meadow can be a complete short outing; descending adds a return climb.

Otway: make snowshoeing the main event

In Prince George, Caledonia Nordic has dedicated snowshoe trails, separate from skiing. Snowshoe day passes and adult and junior rentals make it a useful place to try the activity. Use the snowshoe map, including its near-start Twister and Karma circuit, and confirm current access before setting out.

Eskers: give the landscape more of the day

Northwest of Prince George, Eskers Park has a 3 km beginner loop from Pine Marsh. Choose it when you can give the drive and the park more of your daylight. Begin with that defined outing before adding longer lake routes.

Let the snow have a vote

Snowshoes provide flotation in loose snow; a firm, icy path raises a different question about traction. Snow conditions and total carried weight affect performance. The City also cautions that winter trail maintenance is limited.

Check the route guide for the outing you choose, then look at current access and conditions. Four places to begin are more useful than a long list of destinations with the same winter label.
