This chart covers only part of the route. It does not establish the full hike or a return journey.
Coverage and elevation sources
8.30 km along source section 1 of 1, in its mapped direction. Approximate 90 m terrain model along this mapped section. Separate sections are not joined. This chart does not measure total trail ascent or establish current access; use the guide’s published outing measurements.
Mapped named trail. Shows the named source trail. The full published outing, return journey and current on-the-ground alignment are not independently established by this line. Line source (opens original source).
Getting there & parking
Leave Highway 16 for Ptarmigan Creek Forest Road near Catfish Creek west of Crescent Spur.
The club describes continuing 5 km to a fork, then right for 200 m to the creek. Confirm the current usable trailhead because the park gives a different road distance.
Parking: The club approach ends near Ptarmigan Creek after about 5 km on Ptarmigan Creek Forest Road, a right fork and another 200 m. BC Parks instead gives an 8 km road approach; these published starts are not assumed interchangeable.
Full access notes
From Highway 16 east of Prince George, turn onto Ptarmigan Creek Forest Road and follow it about 5 km to the fork. Keep right and continue approximately 200 m to Ptarmigan Creek. Published distances from Prince George differ between guides, so use the named road and current park access information. The creek crossing near the start is a major unresolved access hazard, not a routine bridge crossing.
Estimated drive from Prince George: 2 hr 32 min · 155 km. Modeled one-way driving time from Prince George City Hall, using mapped road speeds. Forest-road sections can take substantially longer: surface, clearance, radio procedures, gates, washouts, plowing, and legal access are not verified by the router. No live traffic or invented forest-road multiplier is included. Allow extra time and check the dated access notes.
Map position: 53.57392, -120.86077 · source-published trailhead / parking waypoint. Embedded trip-map feature 'Trailhead': point [-120.860767, 53.573919].
Named access waypoint extracted from the original public trip map. Current road/parking conditions and legal access still require checking.

On the trail
Assess the unbridged Ptarmigan Creek crossing before proceeding. An unsafe crossing prevents access to the mountain trail.
Beyond the creek and gravel flats, climb the very steep forest route toward the alpine meadows around 1,670 m elevation.
From the meadows, the lake and summit ridge are separate onward choices. The club quotes about 18 km to the meadows and 23 km to the summit, but the exact distance basis must stay attached to the selected outing.
Full route notes
Assess Ptarmigan Creek before proceeding; the source describes the crossing as dangerous and recommends this route only for very experienced hikers. Beyond it, route-finding is needed through brush and across gravel flats before the trail climbs steeply up the east side of Erg Mountain toward meadows around 1,670 m. The small lake and upper ridge provide different stopping options, while the 2,296 m summit is a much longer extension. The guide gives approximately 18 km return to the meadows and 23 km return to the summit. An August 22, 2026 report records clearing and two flagged reroutes to the meadow, but does not establish that the creek crossing has become safe.
The way back
Return by the same mountain approach and reassess the creek before crossing; changing flow can affect the return.
Terrain: unbridged creek crossing · very steep ascent · route finding.
Distance and elevation source notes
About 18 km to meadows and 23 km to summit
1415 m
Source comparison: Official mountain-trail section; 2.5 km; segment only; approach unclear scope. A source edition, network range or unresolved start/endpoint is not a separate route.
Source comparison: Summit outing; 23 km; published itinerary; return/one-way basis is unresolved scope. This is another description of the main outing, a duplicate endpoint, an unscoped source claim, or a related facility.
Conditions & seasons
Creek conditions can change the feasibility of the entire trip. A trail-maintenance report does not provide a crossing forecast, and snow or cloud adds difficulty above the meadows.
Approach cleared; reroutes present
Clearing and brush work reached the meadows. The report notes two reroutes identified by flagging and saw cuts. The hazardous Ptarmigan Creek crossing still requires separate assessment.
The club reported clearing and brush work to the meadows, with two flagged reroutes. This does not resolve the hazardous Ptarmigan Creek crossing or establish summit-route conditions.
BC Parks identifies high avalanche exposure and requires winter-travel preparation and avalanche knowledge. A summer line is not a verified safe winter itinerary.
These are dated research notes. Open the trip planner for current available weather and advisory feeds; no alert found does not establish that a trail or road is open.
No dependable cabin, serviced tent pads or current overnight facility was verified on the Erg route. Treat any overnight plan as a separate wilderness undertaking.
