Outing: loop outing from Main parking northern trail entrance; 3.64 km along the mapped itinerary

Copernicus DEM 2021 GLO-90 via Open-Meteo (90 m resolution). v7-smoothed-ascent-1: interpolate retained terrain samples at 100 m spacing; apply one triangular 1:2:1 smoothing pass over ±100 m; preserve start, finish and documented turnaround heights; sum uphill excursions with a 5 m reversal threshold; round to nearest 10 m.

Approximate terrain-model ascent, not a field or GPS measurement. Coarse cells and smoothing can miss small climbs, switchbacks, structures and sharp terrain. Processing sensitivity is not a statistical confidence interval.

Map and elevation sources

Approximate ground elevation from a 90 m terrain model. Distance follows the mapped itinerary and may differ from published walking distance. This is a terrain-model profile, not a surveyed measurement. Any ascent total is identified separately with its own source or estimation method.

The official BC Parks brochure shows the nested Pine-tree, Juniper and Big Dune trails and the crosslink at the western end of Pine-tree. Its park map was visually checked against the retained named OSM path network. The local YORA guide publishes the main parking trailhead at 52.931196, -119.372379. The selected itinerary uses the northern approach, the named outer loop, the mapped crosslink and a retraced approach, with exact shared source vertices at every junction. No line was traced from the publisher map. The short OSM 120433327 crosslink is absent from that official map and is excluded. The two independent parking entrances are not joined with an invented connector.

Getting there & parking

Start at the northern trail entrance beside the main Jackman Flats parking area off Highway 5, using the park entrance map. The published trailhead point is about 7 m from the mapped path start.

Estimated drive from Prince George: 3 hr 47 min · 278.9 km. Modeled one-way driving time from Prince George City Hall, using mapped road speeds. Forest-road sections can take substantially longer: surface, clearance, radio procedures, gates, washouts, plowing, and legal access are not verified by the router. No live traffic or invented forest-road multiplier is included. Allow extra time and check the dated access notes.

On the trail

From the main parking northern trail entrance, head west and northwest. Follow the northern Pine-tree arm to its junction with Juniper. Continue north on Juniper, leaving the crosslink to the south for the return. At the northern fork, continue west across the south side of the Big Dune circuit, then follow Juniper south. At the southwest junction take the eastbound return path. At its next fork turn north on the established Pine-tree/Juniper crosslink, rejoining the outgoing path. Turn right and retrace that northern Pine-tree approach to the starting trail entrance. This selected return repeats the access stem; it does not use the southern parking entrance or the small unconfirmed shortcut.

Terrain: sand · forest paths · fragile lichen surroundings.

Distance and elevation source notes

Selected loop with a retraced northern Pine-tree approach: 3.64 km measured from licensed mapping. The published 3.4 km trail option is a source figure; this selected itinerary explicitly repeats its northern approach, so do not treat the two measurements as interchangeable. Stay on existing paths to protect fragile lichens; check signs for seasonal ski-track use.

No source-specific numeric gain has been established for this selected itinerary.

Conditions & seasons

Walking-season itinerary. The park also has winter ski trails; obey current signs and avoid damaging prepared ski tracks.
