Wells in Winter: Colourful Houses, Deep Snow and Trails Beyond Town
Discover Wells in winter through its snowy trail network, colourful mining-town streets and a long tradition of making the most of the season.
A town that has practised winter for a long time
Wells has been finding things to do in the snow since its mining days. The Wells Historical Society describes wooden skis fastened to ordinary winter boots, evening gatherings under moonlight and a ski jump on Cow Mountain that drew competitors from beyond the town. Snow was part of community life long before visitors came looking for a winter escape.
That history gives a snowy visit an extra layer. The trails beyond town belong to a landscape where people have repeatedly turned a long season into a social one. A pair of snowshoes fits into that story just as comfortably as a set of skis.

Colour at street level
The historical town’s houses included shades of blue, green, pink and pale yellow. Against snow, a painted wall and a dark window frame can become the whole composition. Leave time to walk the streets before disappearing into the forest; Wells rewards looking at the buildings as well as looking past them.
The district describes art as part of the town’s identity. Galleries, Island Mountain Arts and the Sunset Theatre give a visit a cultural dimension, though a winter weekend needs more advance planning than a summer stroll. The municipal guide specifically notes that gallery visits in winter may be by appointment. Pick something you would like to see, check its own schedule and build the walk around it.

Choose the trail day you want
The Cornish Mountain network combines groomed and ungroomed winter routes. That makes the map more useful than a single headline distance. Decide whether the day is about a shorter outing with time in town or a longer journey into the surrounding forest, then choose the route and equipment together.
Download the local map before leaving your accommodation. Identify your starting point, the junction where you will decide whether to continue, and the route back. On snowshoes, use routes the operator permits for walking; a ski trail is not automatically a shared trail. Where sharing is allowed, keep off prepared ski tracks.
WATS maintains the Cornish Mountain and Meadows network; its Barkerville connections are not groomed or maintained by the society. Treat those as separate backcountry plans.
The landscape has always brought people together
The old mining companies understood recreation’s value. Historical Wells had hockey, curling and skiing alongside its working life. A winter walk through town can make that investment easier to understand: people needed reasons to meet, compete and spend time outdoors when the season was long.
There is a modern expression of that same instinct in the Wells International Gourmet Ski. The February 2026 event combined skiing with food stations and an evening film festival. It was a fundraiser for the trails society, turning trail maintenance into a community celebration. Those are past event details, not a schedule for the coming winter; use the organizer’s next announcement when planning a visit around it.
Make room for the town
A good Wells weekend does not need a summit to justify it. Give one part of the day to the trails and another to whatever is happening in town. Arrange a gallery visit, find a performance if one fits, or simply return with daylight left to look at the streets you passed in the morning.
Keep the two parts flexible. If new snow makes the walk slower, shorten it without losing the rest of the day. If the trail outing is brief, the village still gives you somewhere worth being. That is Wells’ particular appeal: the winter landscape and the community have grown accustomed to sharing the same long season.
